Distribution

Distribution

The third step in the power supply process is the distribution of electricity to homeowners and commercial and industrial businesses. This is handled by the local distribution cooperatives.

From the local substation, power lines carry electricity to smaller transformers that are located outside individual users' locations. Transformers are typically located on power poles for smaller users and concrete pads for larger users. Transformers reduce the voltage to between 117 and 480 volts, depending upon the user's specific needs.

SCADA

While the distribution process happens at the local level, Wabash Valley Power monitors the flow of electricity to identify any problems. A system called Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, or SCADA, sends real-time information to the local co-op and Wabash Valley, so problems can be spotted and repairs can be completed almost immediately. This is just one example of how cooperatives are using today's technology to boost reliability.
